‘Ye Shakespeare’ calls itself one of Bristol’s oldest pubs, which is suspiciously widespread claim to the point it’ll inevitably boil over into some kind of Battle Royale but with more arson. Despite it being just across the bridge from the Old City/Castle Park, I’d never yet explored this side of the river – a night out with a friend (and the fact that Wetherspoons was packed for the Six Nations) led us to this pleasantly cosy spot. I’ve lived near Bristol’s Harbourside for years, but never yet tried the late night food stalls. Whenever I needed a quick greasy fix at 2am, BC Diner’s fried chicken was always there – more often than not, I was probably the only sober person on the customer side of the counter.
Tonight, however, was special. A couple of friends had come all the way from California, and after an evening drinking at the Old Duke it was clear we all needed a proper meal before the long walk home. Walking up to the fountains, CCFC’s eye-catchingly blue box called to us, and a quick glance at their ‘Vegetarians’ menu instantly revealed cheesy chips for the princely sum of £2.80. Jackpot.
Chip Off The Block is an honest-to-god cheesy chips van. I found them flogging their wares at the Bristol Hot Air Balloon Fiesta sandwiched between an £8 a cup Pimm’s stall and some other thoroughly generic food truck, with a proper chalkboard declaring theirs “the best you’ll ever have”.
